FIBA U-19: Nigeria battle Argentina in Brno

Date:

Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress will take on Argentina on Friday in a classification match at the ongoing FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Brno, Czech Republic, following their exit from title contention.

The Nigerian team, coached by Juliana Akhere, were knocked out in the round of 16 after a 77-51 defeat to Hungary on Wednesday. The loss ended their hopes of lifting the trophy in their debut appearance at the tournament.

Now relegated to the classification rounds for teams ranked 9th to 16th, Nigeria will seek to restore pride when they meet Argentina at the Starez Arena Vodova Hall in Brno.

Statistically, Nigeria hold an edge over the South Americans. In four games, the West African side has averaged 61.8 points, 42.3 rebounds, and 11.8 assists. They have a 65.8% success rate from the free throw line, a 33.1% two-point field goal percentage, and 21.2% from beyond the arc.

Argentina, meanwhile, are winless in the tournament. They have averaged 46.5 points, 32 rebounds, and 12.3 assists, shooting 64.6% from the free throw line, 39.2% on two-point attempts, and 22.6% on three-pointers.

Nigeria opened their Group B campaign with an upset victory over China but fell to Canada and Portugal in their subsequent group games, finishing third with a 1-2 record. Their knockout loss to Hungary sent them to the lower bracket of the competition.

Argentina’s form has been poor throughout the competition, with four straight defeats. They lost 68-47 to Spain, 77-49 to hosts Czechia, 83-44 to Japan, and were routed 95-46 by Australia in the round of 16.

Toby Nweke remains Nigeria’s standout performer, averaging 11.5 points per game and scoring in double figures in her last two outings. Argentina’s key player is Nerea Lagowski, who leads her team with a nine-point scoring average.

The winner of Friday’s match will advance to face either Brazil or South Korea in the next classification game.
