Idris Alooma wants NYSC scheme extended to 2yrs

The Federal Government has been advised to extend the one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to two years.

The Ag. Station Manager of Unilorin FM 89.3, Mr. Idris Alooma, stated this in a lecture delivered at the Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA) Career Fair 2019 held at the Faculty Lecture Hall.

He recommended that the first year should be for compulsory services while the second year should be used by the graduates to set up businesses of their own with proper monitoring by the government.

In the lecture, entitled “University and You: Prospect and Challenges in the Outside World”, the ace broadcaster also encouraged prospective and serving corps members to apply for the loan dedicated to serving corps members, which is capable of making them job creators.

Aside that, the Ag. Station Manager enjoined the students “to see opportunities in the legitimate online businesses, blog creation and online reporting, and skill acquisition for them to be successful in the University of Life, Faculty of Experience and Department of Achievement”.

Specifically, Mr. Ibrahim urged the FASA members to learn a skill as least before their graduation, saying that “the management of the University of Ilorin has been making efforts in this direction through the Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC), the Faculty of Education Business Centre, the Unilorin FM 89.3, the Department of Educational Technology, and the Waste to Wealth Centre, among others.

Highlights of the event included a discussion segment where panelists discussed university education in their own time and how they were able to overcome all hurdles.

The segment had as panelists Prof. Y.O. Imam, an Entrepreneur, Mallam Nasir Abdulkadri; the Publisher of Fresh Insight, an online newspaper, Mr Abdulrasheed Akogun; a hip hop artiste and Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Mr Abdulwaheed Isiaka; and the former President of the Unilorin Students’ Union, Comrade Lukman Shobowale.

The panelists encouraged the students of the Faculty of Arts to see opportunities outside their regular class activities.
