The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has begun a nationwide, house-to-house voter registration sensitization campaign aimed at ensuring herders are not excluded from the electoral process.
KACRAN’s National President, Khalil Moh’d Bello, announced the initiative in a statement on Monday, noting that it commenced last Thursday in Jakusko Local Government Area of Yobe State. The exercise follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) programme.
“KACRAN recognizes the importance of this process for its members and is committed to ensuring that pastoralists are not disenfranchised,” the statement read.
The association said herders often face unique challenges due to the nature of their work in remote areas and the complexities of digital registration. The sensitization campaign will educate members on registering those who have turned 18, assist in replacing lost voter cards, update information for those who have migrated, and prepare them to participate fully in the 2027 general elections.
KACRAN praised INEC’s inclusivity in registering even inmates, insisting that herders are equally entitled to their constitutional rights.
It also called on governments and citizens to support INEC’s efforts to register more eligible voters, correct outdated information, and allow the registration of new political parties, thereby expanding the democratic space ahead of future polls.
