Kwara Security: DHQ Unveils Operation Savannah Shield

Date:

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has activated Operation Savannah Shield in Kwara State following last week’s deadly terrorist attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area, where over 100 people were killed. The operation, ordered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, includes the deployment of one battalion of troops to restore security and hunt down the perpetrators.

According to the DHQ, Operation Savannah Shield will also cover Niger State and is aimed at dismantling terrorist enclaves in the area. In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the military assured that those responsible for the killings would be brought to justice. The DHQ also expressed condolences to the Kwara State Government and families of the victims.

The military explained that the new operation was carved out of Operation FANSAN YAMMA to intensify security efforts in the North Central zone. It added that the Armed Forces are working closely with other security agencies to create a safe environment where Nigerians can live without fear.

Providing an update on nationwide operations, the DHQ said troops recorded significant successes across the country within the past week. In the North East, over 50 terrorists were neutralised, 82 kidnapped victims rescued and 13 suspects arrested. In the North West, 19 suspects were arrested and 23 hostages rescued, while the North Central recorded 32 arrests and 22 rescues.

Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, visited Woro community to assess the situation and sympathise with residents. He inspected troop locations, reviewed security arrangements, consulted with community leaders and the senator representing Kwara North, and later proceeded to Niger State to further strengthen military preparedness in the region.
