The Lagos State Government on Monday met with traders at Computer Village, Ikeja, to deliberate on the planned relocation of the popular market to the new ICT and Business Park in Katangowa, Agbado-Oke Odo.
Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Gbolahan Oki, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the meeting was aimed at ensuring transparency and active stakeholder participation in the process. He noted it was the first time in 15 years that government officials had engaged directly with traders at the market on the issue.
“The governor is committed to openness and stakeholder engagement,” Oki said. He added that the Katangowa ICT and Business Park would feature modern facilities such as hotels, banking halls, recreation centres, car parks, a fire station, a police post, and well-planned access roads.
According to him, relocating the market is part of a broader urban renewal and decentralisation agenda designed to decongest major commercial hubs, restore Ikeja’s residential character, and promote sustainable urban development. He urged traders to support the move, avoid trading on roads and drainage setbacks, and align with the state’s urban renewal plans.
The Iyaloja of Computer Village, Chief Abisola Azeez, welcomed the initiative, saying the new site would expand business opportunities and create a more conducive environment for both traders and customers.
Other senior officials present included the General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, Oladimeji Animashaun; Coordinating Director of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Builder Florence Gbaye; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Urban Development, Segun Williams.
Computer Village has grown into a major commercial hub attracting traders, technicians, and customers from across Nigeria and West Africa. However, its rapid expansion has created urban challenges in Ikeja, including heavy traffic, overcrowding, illegal street trading, and poor sanitation, fueling calls for relocation.
