Nigerian Army Steps Up Security in Plateau

Date:

The Nigerian Army has pledged to intensify security operations in Plateau State following renewed attacks in some communities, as residents prepare for the farming season. The General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Maj. Gen. Folunsho Oyinlola, gave the assurance on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

Oyinlola said troops would sustain both kinetic and non-kinetic measures, including aggressive clearance of criminal hideouts, increased patrols in flashpoints and closer collaboration with other security agencies. He noted that recent calm in Barkin Ladi was the result of dialogue and conflict mitigation efforts but warned of emerging threats such as attacks on miners and a large influx of cattle into farming communities. “We cannot allow Barkin Ladi to relapse into avoidable conflict, especially now that the farming season is commencing,” he said.

As part of non-kinetic initiatives, Oyinlola disclosed that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, had directed the distribution of fertiliser to farming and herding communities to support agricultural activities and ease tensions. He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for deploying a Special Forces unit to reinforce security operations in the state.

The army commander urged traditional and religious leaders to strengthen local conflict resolution mechanisms and cautioned youths against actions that could inflame tensions, including farm encroachment and attacks on livestock. He called on residents to provide timely intelligence, stressing that troops under Operation Enduring Peace remain committed to protecting all law-abiding citizens.
