NMA raises alarm over sudden cardiac death in Nigeria

 The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has raised the alarm  of the rising trend of sudden cardiac death in Nigeria, calling on government that the situation requires urgent attention in the country.

The NMA chairman in Ekiti State,  Dr. Sunday Omoya, revealed that a study in a conference shows that more that 80 percent common cases
such as hypertension and other   diseases.

Omoya, said the trend are caused by the constant changes in the life styles of the people moving from the traditional ways to modern life
styles such as diet and others.

The doctors calls for mass awareness on the causes, preventive measures and lifesaving interventions can significantly reduce the
incidence of sudden cardiac death.

The NMA chairman, made the revelations in a communiqué issued at the end of the 2017 annual general meeting of the NMA Ekiti State branch
with the theme conference “Stemming the tide of infrastructural decadence and brain drain in the nation” and the sub-theme “Taming the
surge of sudden cardiac death in the nation”.

The NMA also said infrastructural decay in the health sector in Nigeria has reached an alarming dimensions and it is adversely affecting the quality of healthcare delivery in the country.

The body also condemned the loss of national resources to medical tourism due to poor infrastructure in the country is alarming.
They further posited that the progressively increasing brain drain in the health sector in Nigeria calls for urgent attention and holistic
approach.

The body recommended that health care financing in Nigeria should be improved through increased budgetary allocation of health as advocated
in the ABUja 2001 declaration and implementation of the National health act.

According to the NMA, efforts should be made to reduce sudden cardiac death in Nigeria through prevention and prompt treatment should be
encouraged at all levels.

Corporate bodies, NGO and other non-governmental agencies or organization should invest in health and in the improvement of health
infrastructure in Nigeria, they said.

On the issues relating to the welfare of members, the AGM made the following recommendations that Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele
Fayose, should be commended for the various achievements in the health sector and the approval of the revised CONMESS for doctors in the state.
