Ondo Diocese Alters Easter Vigil Timing Over Safety Concerns

Date:

The Catholic Diocese of Ondo State has announced that this year’s Easter Vigil will commence at 5:00 p.m. across all parishes and communities, citing heightened security concerns in the state and country. The directive, issued on March 30, 2026, comes as part of the Church’s efforts to ensure the safety of worshippers amid ongoing insecurity.

The directive, signed by the Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Michael O. Eniayeju, on behalf of Bishop Most Rev. Jude Arogundade, emphasised that the adjustment reflects “pastoral prudence and sensitivity” while maintaining the faithful’s commitment to celebrating the resurrection of Christ. The Diocese urged all parishes to strengthen local security measures and remain vigilant during the festivities.

Highlighting the broader security implications, the Diocese stressed collective responsibility, calling on worshippers to participate in ensuring safety. The statement concluded with a spiritual appeal for protection and divine intercession, invoking Our Lady Queen of Peace to safeguard communities during the celebrations.

The directive aligns with earlier warnings from the Nigeria Police Force, which in February advised religious organisations in Ondo State to suspend night services following the abduction of six Celestial Church of Christ members in Uso, Owo Local Government Area. Authorities urged all faith-based groups to exercise caution in nocturnal worship activities.

Despite government assurances and proactive measures by security agencies, insecurity in Ondo State and other parts of Nigeria persists. The Diocese’s decision underscores a growing trend among religious institutions to adjust public gatherings and worship schedules in response to safety threats.
