Resident doctors declare five-day warning strike

Date:

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a five-day warning strike beginning Friday, September 12, 2025, to press home long-standing demands.

The decision was announced on Thursday in a statement signed by the General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory Administration, Agbor Affiong.

According to the statement, the strike was approved during NARD’s online National Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, September 10, which continued into the early hours of Thursday.

“Arising from the NARD E-NEC meeting held on Wednesday, the 10th of September, 2025, which extended into the early hours of Thursday, the 11th of September, 2025, the NEC members unanimously resolved to embark on a five-day warning strike. The strike will commence at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, 12th September 2025, and will end on Tuesday, 16th September 2025,” the statement read.

The association directed all its chapters to formally notify their hospital managements and continue pushing for its collective demands during the industrial action.

NARD President, Osundara Zenith, had earlier disclosed to DAILY POST that members were prepared to shut down public hospitals nationwide over poor working conditions, inadequate power supply in health facilities, devaluation of medical certificates, poor remuneration, and other unresolved issues.

The move comes amid an ongoing seven-day warning strike by the Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory, which began on Monday, September 8, further disrupting healthcare services in Abuja.

NARD, which represents thousands of doctors in training across the country, has repeatedly clashed with the government over unmet agreements on welfare, staffing, and infrastructure in Nigeria’s health sector. The latest strike adds to mounting concerns about access to medical care as negotiations between the doctors and authorities remain deadlocked.
