South Africa on Alert Over Suspected Coup Plot, Says Presidency

Date:

The South African government has placed its security forces on high alert following credible intelligence reports indicating a potential coup plot.

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, made the disclosure on Tuesday during her department’s budget presentation to Parliament. She stated that the country’s security cluster had identified a possible coup d’état threat and has already activated preventive mechanisms.“We’ve identified a potential risk of a coup d’état,” Ntshavheni told lawmakers. “There are plans and systems in place to counter this and keep South Africans safe.”

While acknowledging the seriousness of the intelligence, the minister assured both Parliament and the public that there is no immediate danger, and that the situation remains firmly under control.

The alert comes amid a backdrop of growing political tensions and ongoing investigations, although specific details regarding the suspected plotters have not yet been disclosed.

Government officials have urged citizens to remain vigilant, calm, and cooperative, encouraging the public to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.

“Our commitment to democratic institutions and national stability remains resolute,” Ntshavheni emphasized.

Authorities say they will continue to closely monitor developments and will issue updates as needed to ensure transparency and maintain public confidence.
