Suspected Herders Kill Farmer in Oyo, Olubadan Summons Police Commissioner

Date:

Suspected herders have allegedly killed a 47-year-old farmer, Mutairu Oladosu, in Asa Village, Okelade area of Ido Local Government Area, prompting the Olubadan, Rashidi Ladoja, to summon the state police authorities over the incident.

Oladosu, who held the title of Otun Balogun of Oluode Okelade, was reportedly attacked while working on his tomato farm alongside one of his daughters. Eyewitnesses said the assailants, suspected to be armed herders, invaded the farmland and launched an unprovoked assault that led to his death.

Confirming the incident, the Okelade Okin, Wahab Olabamiji, said three suspected herders carried out the attack. He disclosed that one suspect had been arrested and handed over to the police, while others remain at large.

Olabamiji also raised concerns about growing insecurity in surrounding communities, alleging that residents now live in fear due to repeated threats linked to suspected herders’ activities.

He said community leaders visited the Olubadan’s palace to brief the monarch on the situation and prevent the incident from escalating into wider unrest.

Reacting to the development, Ladoja confirmed that he had invited the Oyo State Police Command Commissioner of Police to his palace for briefing on the killing and ongoing investigations.

According to him, police authorities confirmed that one suspect is already in custody, while efforts are underway to track down others connected to the attack. He added that the police assured the palace that justice would be served once investigations are concluded.

The incident has heightened tensions in parts of Ido Local Government Area, with community leaders calling for stronger security measures to protect farmers and rural residents.
