Tinubu Swears In Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

Date:

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday swore in Prof. Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The brief ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking the official commencement of Amupitan’s tenure as head of the nation’s electoral body.

Amupitan, who appeared in a white agbada paired with a gold cap, succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC Chairman recently expired.

His appointment followed confirmation by the Senate earlier this week after a screening session in which he outlined his vision for Nigeria’s electoral process.

During his screening, Amupitan pledged to work towards building an electoral system where “the loser will congratulate the winner,” emphasizing transparency, fairness, and credibility as his guiding principles.

The new INEC chairman’s inauguration signals the start of a new phase for the electoral commission as preparations continue for upcoming off-cycle and general elections across the country.
