The United Towns Agency for North South Cooperation (UTA), Nigeria chapter, a United Nations accredited Non-Governmental Organisation has called on the federal government of Nigeria to protect women from serial killers especially in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
The UTA made the call following the senseless murder of nurse Chinemerem Chukwumeziem and lawyer, Princess Nwamaka Chigbo who were victims of serial killers in the name of one-chance and alleged kidnappers on the 3rd and 5th of January this year. It pointed out that these incidents which are not isolated cases highlight the dangers faced by Nigerians, especially women.
While making the call, the Country President of UTA, Princess Abigail Amalaha implored the government to put necessary security measures in place to protect Nigerians, not only women from falling victims of these unfortunate situation. She emphasised the need for improved security measures, citing the vulnerability of professionals who contribute to the nation’s growth. Similar incidents in 2025 include the killing of over 80 women between January and June, as reported by DOHS Cares Foundation, underscoring a growing femicide crisis.
According to Amalaha, “if the safety of professionals who work tirelessly for their nation cannot be guaranteed, then there is the need to recalibrate the security architecture of not only the FCT, but the nation at large”. The fate of these innocent victims exposes the inherent danger an average Nigerian, especially women faces on a daily basis especially in Abuja that is meant to be the mirror of the nation to the global community.
“Should all our treasured and hard working women be victims of these serial murderers before the government will take the bull by the horns to make our cities, especially the FCT safe for everybody”, she queried.
She further stated that the growing trend demands urgent attention by the government through ensuring the safety of all citizens by strengthening security on major roads, provide safe transport system for night and early morning shift workers, installing CCTV in all major roads and endeavour to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Though the government seems to be doing their best towards securing lives, especially in the FCT, we urge them to double their efforts to restore confidence on the people who entrusted their security to them”.
She summed up by saying that the growing pattern of the killings has turned the normal routine work journey for many workers into life threatening risk where they leave their homes in the morning and not sure of what fate holds for them at the close of work.
“This is a very unfortunate situation for the country at this auspicious moment that the president is wooing investors and the international community to invest in the country,” she concludes.
