Popular Nigerian social media personality, VeryDarkMan, has publicly criticized his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, over a recent post warning him against taking unnecessary risks.
Adeyanju, in a message shared via X (formerly Twitter), said he frequently advises his client to be cautious, warning that if anything were to happen to him, life would go on regardless. “If anything happens to you today, everyone has moved on by tomorrow. We only overrate ourselves; Nigerians don’t rate anybody,” the lawyer wrote.
The post sparked speculation of a possible rift between the two, with many social media users interpreting it as a sign of growing tension.
Responding in a video posted on Instagram, VeryDarkMan expressed deep disappointment, calling the comment cowardly and unbefitting of a fellow activist. “Anybody wey open his mouth talk that thing is a coward,” he said.
He criticized Adeyanju for making the statement despite being someone he regarded as a “comrade” in advocacy. “If it was an ordinary Nigerian that said this, I would have assumed they don’t know better,” he added.
VeryDarkMan acknowledged that Nigerians often move on quickly from tragedies, but argued that this is true for everyone. “Jesus Christ died, the world moved on. A Pope died, a new one was installed. Buhari died, the world moved on. So who do you think is special?” he said.
He further alleged that such statements are tools used by politicians to discourage activism and silence dissent. “That is a word those politicians have put out there to scare people from talking,” he claimed.
Despite the warning, VeryDarkMan insisted he would continue to speak out on social issues, adding that even those who avoid risks are not safe. “Some people wey no dey take risks, them still come kill them for their house,” he said, citing recent violence in various Nigerian states.
Neither Adeyanju nor his legal team has issued a follow-up statement at the time of this report.
