Former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and ex-Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has praised the University of Ilorin for its sustained commitment to academic excellence and institutional development.

Prof. Jega gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, on Monday, June 30, 2025. The visit followed his appearance as the Guest Speaker at the Annual Distinguished Personality Lecture organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences in honour of Senator Saliu Mustapha, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Production Services, and Rural Development.

“I must commend the Vice Chancellor and the management for the excellent work being done to maintain the University as a center of excellence,” Jega stated. “As a university person, it is encouraging to see committed individuals contributing meaningfully to the growth of our institutions.”

Prof. Jega, who co-chairs the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms, said he accepted the lecture invitation due to the importance of the topic, “Livestock Development in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges,” and his personal regard for the University. He emphasized the relevance of the initiative to national peace, economic development, and social cohesion.

“This initiative has been in development for over a year. Engaging with stakeholders and academic institutions is essential for refining and implementing the reform,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, welcomed Jega to what he described as Nigeria’s most sought-after university. He highlighted the institution’s disciplined student body and scenic environment.

Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Adedoyin Jolaade Omede, described the lecture as part of an annual tradition to honour individuals who have made significant national contributions. She expressed her admiration for Prof. Jega, recalling his encouragement during her early academic career.

Also present during the visit were Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moji Taibat Bakare-Odunola; Registrar, Mr. Mansur Adeleke Alfanla; University Librarian, Prof. Kamaldeen Tunde Omopupa; and members of the University Governing Council.
