The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has commended Unilorin Holdings Limited (UHL) for building one of the most diverse and innovative commercial portfolios within Nigeria’s university system.
Prof. Egbewole made the remarks at the maiden End-of-the-Year Get-Together and Send-Off organised by UHL at the Dam Site, where he was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye.
He said the scope of UHL’s operations justifies its status as a holding company, expressing confidence that sustained expansion would eventually allow it to operate independently of the University’s administrative structure.
The Vice Chancellor noted that UHL staff were selected for their ability to think creatively and operate beyond conventional civil service or academic frameworks, adding that this approach is already reflected in the company’s growth.
Describing the event as a moment of reflection and appreciation, he praised the Managing Director, Prof. Bashir Raji, for the initiative and congratulated award recipients for their integrity, transparency and commitment to excellence.
Earlier, Prof. Raji said UHL recorded growth in 2025 despite economic challenges, including volatile fuel prices that affected some ventures, particularly the petroleum outlet.
He said the company expanded from seven to nine business units during the year, with the addition of an Optometry Unit and Unilorin Health Services, attributing the progress to the support of the University Governing Council and management.
Prof. Raji also disclosed that UHL fully disengaged University staff from its operations during the year, making it a private-driven entity aimed at improving efficiency and competitiveness.
Looking ahead, he urged staff to remain committed in 2026, saying UHL would continue to explore new opportunities and expand its commercial footprint in line with the University’s vision.
