The Imo State chapter of the Action Peoples Party (APP) has accused the Hope Uzodinma–led government of being responsible for an alleged attack on supporters of Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere during a constituency event in Ideato South Local Government Area.
The allegation was made in a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Steve Nnadi, who claimed that security operatives and suspected thugs were deployed to disrupt a constituency briefing and the unveiling of a federal constituency office held at Christ Anglican Church, Itueke.
According to the APP, the incident led to chaos at the venue, with attendees reportedly subjected to tear gas, intimidation, and physical assault. The party described the development as an attempt to intimidate opposition voices and suppress political engagement in the area.
The statement alleged that the action reflected a recurring pattern of political harassment against Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
It further claimed that similar incidents had occurred in the past, including an alleged attack on the lawmaker’s country home, which reportedly resulted in destruction of property and loss of lives.
The APP condemned the incident, warning that such actions could heighten political tension and threaten peace in the state. It also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Imo State Elders Council, and the State House of Assembly to intervene and caution the state government.
The party urged residents within and outside the state to speak out against what it described as growing political intolerance.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mbadiwe Emeluba, were unsuccessful as calls, messages, and WhatsApp inquiries were not answered at the time of filing this report.
