Era of cat and mouse executive, legislative relationship over –Senate Leader

Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan has promised that the 9th National Assembly would work in harmony with the Executive arm of government for more dividends of democracy for Nigerians during the second tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, Lawan who represents Yobe North on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC said the next National Assembly billed for inauguration on June 9, would make good governance a priority for the benefits of all.
He said the kind of cat and mouse relationship between the Executive and Legislature during the outgoing National Assembly would not be allowed to continue “because the 9th Senate would not be as crisis ridden as the 8th Senate”.
Lawan, who is re-elected for four year tenure as a senator, said though it’s one of the characteristics of most democracies in the world, there would be improved relationship between the Executive and Legislative arms of government in the 9th National Assembly.
According to him, the next four years would afford the federal government better opportunities to advance the course of the nation, saying the next National Assembly, that is, the Senate and House of Representatives would be filled by the APC majority to make democracy works better.
He said: “I can assure you that the 9th Senate will definitely be different from what we experienced in this 8th Senate.
“I am not saying that there will not be dissenting voices coming from the opposition but it will not be such that will be violent or abusive.
“We shall work to promote the interest and welfare of Nigerians by demonstrating our loyalty and commitment to the President, Muhammadu Buhari, and our party the APC”.
The Senate Leader said it was regrettable that the relationship between the two arms of government was not cordial, adding that it affected performance and assured that “all that will change, I can assure you”.
Lawan noted that the outcome of the 2019 general elections was an indication that Nigerians had fate in the administration, thanking them for believing in the APC and called for continued support for the party even after the elections.
He said national development was a priority to the ruling party, stressing that its leadership was committed to this rather than personal interest.
“As a party we believe in national development rather than the interest of politicians and I want to say that we will listen to the party in matters of legislative leadership. The ninth Senate will go full blast and we shall be loyal to the party no matter our interests”, he said.
The 8th National Assembly journey from 2015 took off on an acrimonious note, as the ruling APC was pitted against members of the National Assembly who were bent on choosing their own leaders against those approved by the party leadership.
