Kwara set distribute treated moquito nets for households

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-lmam made this known during the week, at an interactive engagement with trainees drawn from other strategic health interventions in the state.

The state-wide distribution of nets to all household is part of the Kwara State Government’s implementation of the joint multi-stakeholders intervention plan to combat the spread of Malaria, across the state.

Dr. El-imam said, the use of insecticide treated nets is one key strategy that every household in Kwara will find beneficial in preventing bites from anopheles mosquitoes, the transmiters of the Malaria causing parasites in the human body.

She added that the Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s leadership is health friendly and committed to the welfare of citizens in all parts of the state.

In a related development, the Programme Manager for the State’s Malaria Elimination Programme, Mrs Nimota Raji, applauded the partners who have been supportive in the training and provision of technical guidance to the participants.

Mrs Raji noted that the partners have opted to rely on the support base received from the pool of adhoc staff already engaged in the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) programme within the Kwara Central and Kwara North Senatorial districts, while new addition would be restricted to 5 LGAs in Kwara South senatorial districts where the SMC programme has not been held in the last 3 years.

The team, led by the Society for Family Health, Mr. John Ocholi, stated that the state would benefit immensely from this year’s exercise and be the first State in Nigeria to combine the implementation of drugs to children for SMC with concurrent nets distribution to households.

Mr. Ocholi added that the state has been further sub-divided into 3 for the use of different strategies in each of the catchment. Hence only MORO LGA would have a fixed point of collection method for the net and the house to house method for the drugs. The 5 LGAs in Kwara South, namely, Isin, Irepodun, Ekiti, Oyun and Offa LGAs would distribute only nets from house to house while the remaining ten LGAs would receive both nets and malaria preventive drugs (SPAQ) for children between the ages of 3 months to 5 years on a house to house basis.

The Director Public Health, Dr. Oluwatosin Fakayode emphasized that advocacy and media engagement would commence without further delay to make members of the public understand the difference in this year’s exercise from the ones organized in the past and the need for the usual cooperation of the public.
