Obi Slams Tinubu Over Unpaid Pensions Despite Revenue Claims

Date:

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s recent claim that Nigeria has already met its 2025 revenue target, describing the remark as “insensitive” in the face of unpaid pensions and gratuities.

In a post on his verified X handle on Thursday, Obi questioned the government’s compassion for Nigerians, particularly retirees and small businesses, who continue to struggle under the weight of harsh economic realities.

“Having met our revenue target for the year ahead of schedule, we should show sensitivity and compassion by deploying resources to critical areas that will create jobs and ease hardships,” Obi wrote.

He decried the plight of retired public servants, including military veterans, who still protest over unpaid entitlements despite the government’s revenue claims. “It is shameful that those who built this nation with their sweat and defended it with their lives are reduced to begging for what is rightfully theirs,” he said.

The former Anambra governor also highlighted the funding crisis faced by small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) and other key economic players, warning that unmet financial obligations are pushing many into debt and despair.

“Achieving revenue targets means nothing if it does not impact the lives of the people,” Obi added, urging the government to act “responsibly and with integrity.”
