Peace Corps Pledges Support for FG in Tackling Insecurity

Date:

The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has pledged to support the Federal Government in addressing the country’s security challenges, vowing to work closely with security agencies in intelligence gathering to curb kidnapping, banditry, and other crimes.

National Commandant of the Corps, Dr. Dickson Ameh Akoh, made the pledge during a courtesy visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, in Abuja. He said the Corps, with its large network of educated youths across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, was strategically positioned to complement government efforts in safeguarding communities.

Akoh commended President Bola Tinubu for his “genuine commitment” to security and youth empowerment within his first two years in office, stressing that tackling insecurity requires collective action beyond security agencies. He assured that the Corps would operate within the framework of a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government, deploying members nationwide to support peace and development initiatives.

The MoU, signed by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, on behalf of the government, formally recognizes the activities of the Corps for the first time in its 30-year history. It provides for nationwide implementation of PCN programmes, including humanitarian services, youth empowerment, and securing schools against external threats.

Responding, Senator Akume praised the Corps’ commitment and pledged to convey their message of solidarity to President Tinubu. The visit was highlighted by the formal presentation of the MoU, with senior Corps officials accompanying Dr. Akoh.
