Saraki Addresses 2027 Presidential Aspirations

Date:

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has announced that he will not contest the 2027 presidential elections, citing fairness and respect for Nigeria’s political zoning arrangement. He emphasized that the South, which assumed power in 2023, should be allowed to complete its tenure.

Saraki explained that his decision aligns with the principle of rotational power between the North and South. He said that the issue of zoning should be revisited in 2031, when power is expected to return to the North.

He highlighted that contesting in 2027 could disrupt the current political balance and would likely not attract support from Southern voters, who may view such a move as undermining their tenure.

According to Saraki, giving the South the full eight-year span in office, with the current term plus the next, is necessary to maintain political harmony and avoid unnecessary conflicts between regions.

His comments come amid ongoing debates over zoning and succession ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political parties and stakeholders continue discussions on rotational power and electoral strategies.
