United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has urged African women to lead with purpose, courage, and conviction, emphasizing that delivering results is key to making a lasting impact. She made the remarks during an audience with women from Nigeria’s Niger Delta attending the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York.
The delegation, led by former Permanent Secretary Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agary and including representatives from the Niger Delta Development Commission and media, sought to learn from global best practices and explore strategic partnerships to strengthen women’s initiatives in the Niger Delta.
Mohammed commended the delegation for their dedication, urging them to focus on organising and sustaining their programmes. She stressed that coordinated efforts attract partnerships and support that endure beyond any single administration, highlighting the importance of visibility, engagement, and collaboration in achieving meaningful change.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General also shared insights from her global work, citing support for women leaders in Namibia, Tanzania, and conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Chad, and the Sahel. She emphasized that leadership requires resilience, integrity, and commitment to serving communities, encouraging African women to deliver tangible results and uphold their values.
On the prospects of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, Mohammed expressed optimism, urging continued efforts to end maternal mortality, ensure education for all, and empower women. She concluded by inspiring the delegation, reminding them that “the sky’s the limit” for those committed to purposeful leadership and service.
