Ogun Enforces Order, Demolishes Shanties at Sango Tollgate

Date:

The Ogun State Government has banned street trading and demolished shanties around the Sango Tollgate along the Ogun–Lagos border to reduce traffic hazards and prevent frequent accidents. The exercise, conducted on Tuesday, targeted illegal structures on road setbacks and under the bridge, which authorities say have contributed to fatalities in the area.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Kafayat Lawal, led the demolition and stated that traders had received prior warnings and notices to vacate the area. Lawal emphasized that the government had provided an alternative trading location at Plaza Road in Sango for affected traders.

The official noted that the move aims to eliminate street trading activities that often result in avoidable deaths and permanent injuries. She highlighted the government’s concern over the Tollgate and under-bridge areas, which have become sources of worry due to recurrent accidents linked to street trading.

Lawal warned that traders who return to the Sango Tollgate or under the bridge would face legal consequences. She stressed that enforcement would continue to ensure compliance and safeguard the lives of commuters and residents.

The government reiterated its commitment to public safety and urban order, emphasizing that the measures are necessary to prevent further loss of life and permanent disabilities caused by unsafe trading practices along busy roadways.
