Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor following a vacancy in the office.
The nomination was disclosed on Wednesday in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who said the move was made in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to nominate a replacement when the position becomes vacant.
The deputy governorship seat became vacant after the resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026. The governor urged lawmakers to expedite consideration of the nominee to ensure continuity in governance.
According to the statement, the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders across the state as part of efforts to strengthen the administration’s governance structure and improve service delivery.
Garo, 48, is described as an experienced political administrator who has served in several roles, including State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the governor, Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, Chairman of the Kano chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
He was also the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State during the 2023 general elections.
