Economist and banker Muhammad Hayatu-Deen has declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s presidency under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pledging to prioritise national development, economic reform and unity. 🇳🇬
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Tuesday night, Hayatu-Deen said his decision to join the ADC followed what he described as internal crises within major opposition parties, which he believes have weakened their ability to provide a strong alternative ahead of future elections.
He said the ADC is increasingly attracting experienced political actors committed to building a credible opposition platform, noting that several members of the party have previously served in senior public offices, including governorship and vice-presidential roles.
Responding to concerns about his political structure and grassroots reach, the former chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group said his decades-long engagement across different regions of the country through education, professional work and public service had helped him build strong national networks.
Hayatu-Deen identified insecurity and economic challenges as the country’s most urgent priorities, stressing that both issues must be addressed simultaneously. According to him, poverty, unemployment and limited opportunities are key drivers of insecurity and require coordinated national solutions.
He proposed convening experts and stakeholders across sectors to develop urgent strategies for tackling the country’s socio-economic challenges, drawing inspiration from past national development frameworks.
Expressing confidence in his support base nationwide, he said his ambition is driven by a long-standing commitment to Nigeria’s development and a desire to contribute meaningfully to solving its governance and economic problems.
He also reaffirmed his loyalty to the ADC leadership, pledging to abide by the party’s decision-making process regarding the selection of its presidential candidate.
