Benue Varsity shut-down indefinitely.... Read why
It was gathered that the deceased students were occupants of the front seat of an 18-seater campus bus and were heading for their lecture hall to take a test scheduled for about 8:00am when their driver applied an emergency break to avert hitting a motorcycle that suddenly overtook his vehicle but instead somersaulted.
A student leader who didn’t want his name mentioned said two students died on the spot and at least four others who sustained injuries are already receiving treatment in the hospital while few others whose injuries were not serious are being treated in their homes.
But some witnesses alleged that it was the tyre of the vehicle which removed from the wheel when it hit the motorcycle conveying three passengers at about 7:30am and that the three victims died on the spot.
It was further learnt that students of the institution who were angered by the development immediately began a violent protest as they destroyed several properti belonging to the school and also burnt the accidental vehicle.
The school authority however swung into action and  ordered the students to proceed on mid-semester break with immediate effect.
An internal memorandum signed by the registrar of the school, Mrs Helen Nyitse, stated in part, that, “all students are expected to handover all university property in their possession and vacate the campus before 2:00pm on Wednesday, 15 August, 2018 until further notice.”
Meanwhile the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, adding that he was yet to get details of causality involved in the accident.
