Emirates FA Cup: Arsenal rule on Wenger’s future next week

Arsene Wenger with Arsenal’s 13th Emirates FA Cup trophy

Arsenal board of directors will decide either on Wednesday or Thursday,  whether the club will retain the services of their coach, Arsene Wenger for another season.

Wenger himself gave the indication  about the impending decision in an interview with BBC at the end of the Emirates FA Cup final, which his team won for a record 13th time, seven of them since he joined the club in 1996.

“We have a board meeting on Tuesday, and on Wednesday or Thursday it will be very clear,” the 67 year-old Wenger told the BBC.

Arsenal: the 2017 FA Cup Champions

His  contract expires this June and signing a new deal has been the subject of speculation for months, as the Frenchman faces a barrage of criticisms from Arsenal supporters.

In an interview Football Focus before the final, Wenger described the criticism  as “a disgrace” he will “never forget”.

Arsenal players: excited with the trophy

The FA Cup victory adds some much-needed joy to a campaign in which they finished fifth in the Premier League, failing to reach the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

“I know my mind (on future). Let us enjoy this win and not worry about the future,” he said afterward.

“I try to serve this club with always the same commitment and quality.

“We had some difficult moments but I spent every minute of my season on full commitment and we never give up and that is why today I am more proud than usual because the team and myself refused to give up and we finished the job in a positive way.

“Nobody gave us a chance and we responded with attitude and class and we have seen that today.

“For once I have kept my medal so that means it is a special night for me and for the rest we will see what happens in the future.”

With today’s sensational victory against Chelsea, Arsenal have now become the most successful club in Emirates FA Cup history

In one of the finest finals in recent memory, the Gunners were magnificent to a man – dominating the first half, soaking up pressure in the second, and eventually battling back from a late equaliser to go back up the other end and win it in style.

The team  made a dream start,  taking the lead in four minutes  through Alexis after he raced on to a ball that deflected off him and beat Thibaut Courtois.

Twice in the first half, the team via  Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck came so close to adding the second goal. But it was not to be.

Chelsea came out with renewed energy after the restart, but Arsenal soaked up the pressure and went close through Hector Bellerin.

Diego Costa’s late equaliser was a hammer-blow, but Arsenal responded, when  Olivier Giroud, just off the bench, brilliantly set up Aaron Ramsey for a diving header to win the trophy.
