Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq  of Kwara State has been called upon not to delay further the declaration of first day of Islamic calendar year – 1st Muharram as public holiday.

Renowned Islamic scholar and leader of Alumni Association of Markaz in Agege, Lagos State, Dr. Yusuf Kolawole Jimoh while participating in a special prayer organised for the chairman of National Hijra Committee in Kwara State and 1st Grand Kadi of the state, late Justice Abdulkadir Orire.

Jimoh, according to a statement by the

National Coordinator, Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, MMWG, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, informed that marking of the commencement of new Islamic calendar year by Nigerian Muslims  started in  Ilorin, the Kwara State capital 42 years ago (1980) after which other states in the country joined in the celebration some years later.

He said “it is ironical to note that several other states that joined have succeeded in securing 1st Muharram as public holiday; while Kwara State that hosted the first celebration is yet to do so.”

While commending Governor AbdulRazaq for attending the last Maolid Nabiyy celebration held at the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin recently, he appealed to him to urgently approve the declaration of 1st Muharram as work-free day; noting that states with less Muslim population have declared the day as public holiday.

Also speaking on the occasion the Chief Imam of Ansaru-Deen Society of Nigeria, Ilorin Branch, Imam Shafi Muhammad who officiated at the prayer session, admonished all political office holders and leaders in all capacities to use their offices to serve Almighty Allah and humanity with absolute sincerity, saying that is the only way the positions could benefit them here and hereafter.

Meanwhile, all is now set for the Kwara State Final of Qur’an Memorization contest in the state.

The event which is slated for Wednesday 2nd February in Ilorin is being organised by the Kwara State Committee on Qur’an Memorization under the leadership of Danmadami of Ilorin, Alhaji Shehu Abdul-Gafar.

The state governor, Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Abdul- Razaq is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion while the Grand-Patron of the Committee and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, will be supported by all Muslim 1st class traditional rulers in the state.

A Professor of Chemistry, Nasir Abdulsalaam who is also the Chief Imam of the University of Ilorin will deliver a lecture on the importance of the ceremony; while Senator Sadiq Umar representing Kwara North in the National Assembly will preside over the ceremony scheduled to begin by 10.00 am.
