Kwarapoly tuition fees saga laid to rest—KWHA Speaker

The ongoing tuition hike crisis in the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has now been laid to rest as the joint committee set up by the government had unanimously reduced the tuition fees by across board for the 2017/2018 academic session.
Addressing newsmen on the recommendations of the joint Exexutive-Legislative committee in his office, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr Ali Ahmad said the payable fees by students are now lower than what they paid during the last 2016/2017 academic session.
Dr. Ahmad said the committee also recommended that all students that had paid above the 2017/2018 fees just approved would be refunded by the institution’s authority, adding that students have up till the end of January to fully pay their newly approved tuition fees.
He added that the decision of the joint committee supersedes all earlier decisions on the Kwara Polytechnic tuition fees.
“We thanked God we are able to deliver on this promise. With the decision of today, the issue of the 2017/2018 tuition fees of Kwara Polytechnic is hereby finalised” Dr Ali said.
The Speaker disclosed that the joint committee was chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Isiaka Gold with Hons Jimoh Akanni Abdul Rahman, Abdul Rasheed Taiwo Abdullahi, Adamu Usman, Mathew Olaitan Babaoye Permanent Secretary General Services as Secretary, Alhaji Abdulrafiu Ayinla as the committee scribe, Hon, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr Aminat Ahmed, the Chief of Staff to the Government House, Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Alhaji Mas’ud Elelu, SSA Tertiary Institution, Dr. S.A. Ajayi .
Dr. Ahmad said the decision to reduce the tuition fees beyond what students paid last year was reached, based on ‘credible information and the need to reflect the policy of the state government that education should at all time be affordable to students.
He praised the Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki, for subtly reminding the State Government of its commitment to affordable education in the state, and the state Governor, Alhaji Abdul Fatah Ahmed for allowing the Joint Committee unfettered access to the book of the institution and not interfering with the investigative work.
He expressed delight that the singular efforts had demonstrated that democracy was working in the state, and assured that the legislature would always collaborate with other arm of government, to deliver good governance to the people of the State.
Responding, on behalf of the student body, Comrade Uthman Abdul Kadir praised the efforts the House and the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki ,for responding to the yearnings of the students and parents and assured that the student body would toe the line of peace, in expressing its grievances.
It would be recalled that on the 20th December, 2017, when Senior members of the Executive appeared before the Committee of the whole House, the House was briefed about the decision of the Governor to set up a Joint Committee with a promise that parties would abide by the outcome.
