Nigeria’s Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, has ordered officers from the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, to shoot anyone trying to attack prison facilities across the country.

According to a report by The Nation, Mr. Aregbesola gave the directive while addressing senior officers at the NCoS Agodi Custody Center during an official inspection visit to the facility on Monday.

The minister, the officers must make it impossible for any attack to penetrate the premises, saying that such a development must remain an attempt.

He said attacks on detention centers are acceptable and must stop, adding that any attempt must be resisted with brutal force from now on.

Mr Aregbesola said: “The most important thing is the impregnability of the security of this facility.

“This is a red zone, a dangerous zone. Whoever tries to breach the facility is already dead. He must not live to tell the story.

“Any effort to violate our facilities is not acceptable. Do not shoot to wound, but shoot to kill for any reason.

“This is a full embodiment of the state to ensure the safety of the people.”

He assures officers that the government will do everything possible to ensure that their well-being is a top priority as a way to ensure effective service delivery.

“We will do everything possible for your well-being to guarantee an effective service.

“I must congratulate your work for not registering any cases of Covid-19 in your facilities.

“You must be effective in preventing the penetration of this facility.

“You must have the ability to viciously repel any attempt to attack or invade this facility, and an attempt must remain an attempt.”

Based on the ongoing facility tour, the minister ordered the demolition of shops and shopping malls in and around the prison facility.

It is also expected to tour the newly built medium-sized facility in the Olomi-Olunde area of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state.
