Navy hand over arrested oil thieves, vessel to EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has began investigations on the suspected eight oil thieves in Rivers State.
EFCC Port Harcourt Zonal Command had earlier received the suspects from the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, Akiama Road, Bonny Island, Rivers State, on January 10, 2024.
In a statement on its website, EFCC noted that the suspects were apprehended with an unquantified amount of illegally acquired Automotive Gas Oil, known as diesel, around Bonny Channel.
Naval officer, Lieutenant Commander G.Y. Gwaza, confirmed that: “the vessel, MV Cabrini, and her eight crew members were arrested during an operation on November 8, 2023.
He further stressed, “the suspected oil thieves were handed over to the EFCC for further questioning and prosecution.
The EFCC officer, Chief Superintendent, Itoro Levi, who received the suspects on behalf of the Commission, “assured that thorough and professional investigations would be carried out in the case in due course”.
She applaud the Nigerian Navy for its commitment and collaborative efforts with the anti-graft agency.
