Nigeria to assist Ghana on biotechnology – Perm Sec
The Supervising Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), Mr. Idowu Afe, said that Nigeria, through the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), is ready to assist Ghana in developing its biotechnology.
Afe said this when he received a delegation of Ghanaian parliamentarians at his office in Abuja on Tuesday.
The Permanent Secretary assured the visitors that NABDA, one of the ministry’s agencies, will collaborate in the biotechnology and biosafety space.
Afe, who insisted on the importance of ITS as a vital tool to boost agricultural productivity, emphasized that it was time for African nations to invest in local technologies.
He said that developing and harnessing local technologies would reduce dependence on foreign products and services.
He also spoke to the visitors about the policies developed that would help President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s transformation agenda from a commodity-based to a knowledge-based economy.
Earlier, the regional representative of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), Dr. Frances Onyekachi, said that Nigeria is ahead of Ghana in the biotech space and they came to replace Nigeria.
Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, Parliamentary Speaker for Environment, Science and Technology of Ghana, commented that they came to learn from Nigeria on how to develop their biotech space.
