Plateau United players: still on top of the Nigerian league

By Peter Amine/Jos

Plateau United FC on Sunday in Jos, defeated visiting Shooting Stars of Ibadan 2-0, to remain top of the Nigerian Professional Football League table, with six games to go.

They now have 58 points. MFM FC are second with 55 points, after beating Remo Stars by a lone goal in  Sagamu.

Plateau  United got the maximum three points  in a match played under a heavy downpour.

The determined Jos-based club attacked their opponents from the blast of the whistle and had two penalty appeals turned down in the first 10 minutes.

The host, however, had their breakthrough in the 15th minute when Emmanuel Odafe connected Solomon Junior’s free kick into the visitor’s net.

Remo Stars: beaten again by MFM FC

NAN reports that because of the heavy downpour, both teams opted for caution, concentrating play in the midfield for most part of the game.

The host, however, put the game beyond the reach of the visitors when Ibe Johnson doubled their lead during a goal mouth scramble in the 75th minute.

With the result, Plateau United remain firmly on course to achieving its dream of winning the league title for the first time in the history of the 42-year-old club.

In Sagamu, bottom-of-the league Remo Stars had their hearts broken by the visitors from Agege in Lagos, losing 0-1 and extending their run of losses to eight matches.

The match styled South West derby was played at the Gateway International Stadium in the town. With 29 points in 32 matches, it will surely take a miracle for the team to escape relegation.

The 19th placed team, Gombe United have 37 points while defending champions, Rangers International of Enugu have 39 points, in the 18th position.
