Boat Mishap: Group urges Kwara Gov. to establish SEMA

The Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has been urged to establish the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in a bid to curb reoccurrence of the unfortunate incidence of boat mishap in the riverine areas.

A Non-Governmental Organization – the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, (MMWG) stated this in a statement issued on Friday.

The commiserated with the Government and People of Patigi Emirate Council over the death of over one hundred people and disappearance of some others in a boat capsizing accident that occured in Egbunnu Village while returning from Niger State early this week.

Jointly signed by the National Coordinator of the Group Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim and National Secretary Dr. Nasir Balogun, the statement described the incident as an avoidable sad event and prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the departed and comfort the families of the departed.

Meanwhile, the Media Group has called on people living in the riverine areas of Kwara State to guide against future occurence by obeying traffic laws guiding paddling of canoes, boats and ferries on various rivers that abound In Kwara State.

The group also reminded the people about the current raining season in which flooding is possible judging by the predictions of Nigerian Meterological Agency ( NIMET); urging all concerned living closed to river to immediately move out of their location to avoid another tragedy which could lead to loss of lives and property.

It also commended the Kwara State Government on its efforts so far in providing succour to the affected and advised citizens to henceforth help themselves by adhering to laid-down traffic and environmental regulations.

MMWG therefore appealed to the Etsu Patigi and other Traditional Rulers in Riverine Areas to embark on regular sensitization programme that would educate regularly users of boats, canoes and ferry services to prevent future tragedy.
