Borno Police Deploy 1,000 Officers After Mosque Bombing

Date:

The Borno State Police Command has deployed more than 1,000 officers across Maiduguri and other strategic locations following Wednesday’s bomb attack at a mosque that killed five people and injured 35 others.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday evening at the Al-Adum Mosque in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri as worshippers observed the Maghrib prayer.

Speaking on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Nahum Daso, said security had been significantly tightened in response to the incident, despite existing measures already in place.

“Though there were earlier security arrangements, with what happened yesterday, we are making it more intense,” Daso said.

He said the police, in collaboration with other security and emergency agencies, would maintain a heavy presence at worship centres, major roads, flashpoints and recreational areas throughout the festive period.

“There will be full domination of security personnel at churches, recreational centres and other strategic locations where people are expected to gather,” he said, adding that the operation is a joint effort involving multiple agencies.

Daso urged residents to continue their lawful activities but remain vigilant, calling on the public to report any suspicious movements or individuals to security agencies through designated emergency lines. He also said security screening would be enforced at churches and mosques.

Meanwhile, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attack, describing it as “utterly condemnable, barbaric and inhumane.” He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery, assuring residents that additional measures had been put in place to prevent further security breaches during the festive season.
