Group seeks probe of extra judicial killings by Police

A group, Joint Civil Society Action Against Extra Judicial Killings, has charged the acting Inspector General of Police, IGP to constitute a Commission of Inquiry to investigate all cases of extra judicial killings by officers of the Nigerian Police Force across Nigeria.
Specifically, the group wanted justice for Mr. Ogah Jumbo, an Assistant Superintendent of Corps, ASC allegedly killed recently by the police in Abuja.
Addressing journalists on Monday in Abuja, a co-convener of the group, Barrister Emmanuel Ogebe urged the police chief to investigate and met-out commensurate sanctions based on the report of the Commission of Inquiry as well as prosecute any police officer found culpable in the killing of innocent Nigerians to serve as a deterrent to other officers.
Ogebe, who was flanked by other co-conveners like Paul Edeh, Grace Niniola and Aisha Yesufu, wanted Mr. Igbekele Ogunfemi, the Divisional Police Officer of Nyanya Police Station and his men involved in beating Jumbo to death be arrested, investigated and prosecuted along with the two Police men said to be in Police custody.
The group also demanded that the Autopsy Report of the late Jumbo be published within 24 hours for Nigerians to know the real cause of his death.
Similarly, it urged the Police “to tender unreserved apology for the false information presented by the Force Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mba in his press conference of 21st March 2019”, adding that “the IGP should immediately pay a condolence visit to the widow of late Jumbo to commiserate with her over the brutal killing of her husband”.
The group, however, condoled the families of all Nigerians who were victims of extra judicial killings by the Police, especially those of Jumbo, Kolade Johnson, Ada Ifeanyi and Emmanuel Akomofua, among others.
“Today, we join many Nigerians to condemn to condemn in totality the numerous extra judicial killings which has become the order of the day today in Nigeria. It is with heavy heart that we want to lend our voices to demand for justice all victims of extra judicial killings in the hands of Nigerian Police Force. A blow to one we believe is a blow for all”, the group said.
