Muslim Media Watch Group Reacts To Issues (Read full statement)

PRESS STATEMENT: INCONCLUSIVE ELECTION & LAGOS BUILDING COLLAPSE DISASTER

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has received with serious concern, the complaints of some members of House of Representatives Abuja over inconclusive election in seven states of the Federation including Rivers State.
We are concerned because we consider that any political reaction to the issue will over-heat the polity.  To raise a motion over issue that has no bearing with legislative procedures for now, is considered immature as  it is capable of fanning embers of disunity, discord and disaffection.
The MMWG therefore take exception to raising and discussing this matter in the Legislative Chambers when the matter is purely an electoral matter which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has power on in-line with enabling laws that sets it up.. Any individual, Group or persons that have any misgiving over suspension of election in Rivers State and inconclusive elections in Kano, Sokoto, Bauchi, Adamawa, Plateau and Benue States must wait  until INEC finishes its assignment.
We appeal to our National Legislators to be concerned about the need for absolute peace in the Country rather than thinking about their ephemeral political gains, which could cause political instability if raised inappropriately.
As the Nation warms-up for the Judicial Tribunals to receive petitions and deal with them justifiably, all complaints should be channelled to them and the Courts as petitioners deem fit.
SECURITY
Still on election matters, we call on the Police and other Security Agencies to deal ruthlessly with trouble makers who are formenting trouble over inconclusive and suspended elections. The report from Kano, Bauchi and Sokoto as well as Taraba where election has been decided and winner announced is highly condemned and we call for restoration of peace where it is threatened including using of force to bribg perpetrators to justice.
LAGOS BUILDING COLLAPSE DISASTER:
The Nation woke up yesterday and was put into sorrowful mood as an old three-storey Building came down in Lagos Island at about 10.00 am.
This preventable disaster could have been averted if Government Agencies that ought to protect lives and properties do their job effectively and efficiently. It was reported that the building had failed integrity test but was not brought down due to certain interests.
The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria condemns in unequivocal terms the disaster which could be described as a carnage bearing in mind the background information to the incident.
The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LSBCA) was reported to have done its bit by identifying the building for demolition having failed integrity test, the Nation should be interested on the causes for the delay in bringing the structure down before it collapsed to kill dozens of innocent people including pupils of an illegal school operating therein.
We call for immediate demolition of all buildings in Lagos that have failed integrity test to forestal future occurrences and we implore other States in the Country to follow suit. We appeal to all Governments in Nigeria to depoliticise issues that bother on lives of our People. They should be ‘up and doing’ in ‘what is right’.
