Nigeria rates high in out-of-school children globally— Minister

The federal government have appealed to parents across Nigeria to ensure that all children of school age are enrolled in school as a way of implementation of the child right act.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen made the call wile addressing newsmen at a press briefing marking school resumption of children in Abuja on Friday, saying that Nigeria currently accounts for the highest population of out of school children in the world.

Speaking on the reason why parents needs to ensure their wards are in school, Tallen said children constitutes the foundation on which the future of nations are built , as their early years of life have a profound impact on their future, health, development , learning and wellbeing.
According to her, mothers’ lack of formal education contributed to the increased figures of out of school children, and noted that the ministry of women affairs and social development is collaborating with the ministry of education, ministry of health , to ensure that maternal and child death and other related health and education issues concerning women and mothers.
” All children deserves quality education irrespective of gender recognizing that, the girl-child is a vulnerable member of the society who is confronted with several discriminatory practices from birth through childhood,”

” The combination of these negative practices, values, customs and attitudes most often deny her the opportunity of good education and as a result her aspiration and dreams are smothered,”
Expressing her worries with regards to girl child education, Tallen noted that in some locations in Nigeria, girls are given out at the age of 12, after which reproduction sets in , posing a lot of health risk for the girl child as she is not emotionally, physically, or psychologically prepared for marriage and motherhood. She further reiterates that the Buhari administration would leave no stone unturned to degrade insurgency, and restore normalcy in the regions affected by insurgency and encourage school enrolment, retention and completion.
