Nigerians’ mindset makes fighting corruption difficult, says Akande

Chief Adebisi Akande, former Governor of Osun State said successive administrations in Nigeria have failed to conquer corruption due to the mindset and mentality of Nigerians.

He addressed journalists in his Ila-Orangun country home on Saturday as part of activities marking his 85th birthday, said until Nigerians have a change of mindset and embrace the virtues of dedication, determination and hard work, no leader would be able to attack and defeat corruption in the country.”

He further lamented that, “rather than embracing hard work, many Nigerians would prefer to taking short cuts, said leadership alone could not make people prosperous but it encompasses all.

Akande said, “Corruption is not the first thing to fight in the country, otherwise you perish. The mindset and mentality is corrupt. Someone who wants prosperity by miracle without efforts is corrupt. You want riches at all cost by miracle; you are already a corrupt citizen.

“In a country where virtually everybody is corrupt, who is that leader, who will bell the cat? So, you are only blaming the leader for being corrupt, but you are corrupt yourself. In a religious circle, everybody wants comfort and prosperity without work.

“The menace of the present generation is that, they don’t want to want. They want everything by miracle without corresponding efforts. Such a society can never be prosperous or great. No leader can make them prosperous. They will just be blaming the government. A country where everybody is corrupt like Nigeria; nobody can solve their problem except they change their ways for better.”
