Why we took over Arik Airlines - AMCON
Top officials of Arik Airlines and the Asset Management Company of Nigerian (AMCON) have explained why they took over the embattled company.
The new Chief Executive Officer of Arik Airline, Capt Roy Ilegbodu, on Wednesday revealed why Arik Airline was also stopped from operating in the United Kingdom airspace.
He said the airline was stopped because the airline owned UK government the sum of 300,000-pound sterling.
Ilegbodu, who revealed this during a public hearing organised by the House Committee on Aviation, lamented the poor condition of the airline, as it is unable to pay salaries of staff.
He said, “The airline is badly managed. If efficiently managed at this period of time, the company will be revived.”
Explaining why AMCON took over the airline, the Managing Director,
Ahmed Kuru, said that poor condition of the airline warranted such action, adding that AMCON will provide all the necessary support to ensure the airline exists.
Explaining the challenges in the sector, The Managing Director said that about N8 million is needed every month to maintain the airlines while N1.9 million is paid only for fuelling.
