Why Unilorin suspended 2 lecturers –— VC

The recent suspension of two lecturers by the management of the University of Ilorin was as a result of cumulative infractions of some rules and regulations governing good conduct in the University.
The University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in his office, said the disciplinary action taken against Dr. Kayode Afolayan of the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, and Dr. Solomon Oyelekan of the Department of Science Education, Faculty of Education, has nothing to do with their activities as leaders of an underground faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the University campus, as being peddled by mischief makers.
Prof. Ambali told the newsmen that each of the lecturers had received at least two queries over acts of dereliction of duties, serial absence from duties without permission, and use of uncouth language in answering queries, verging on insubordination.
The Vice-Chancellor, who disclosed that on several occasions, students have had cause to write to the management complaining bitterly of the lecturers’ non-attendance at scheduled lectures, said that it was therefore uncharitable to link the suspension of Afolayan and Oyelekan to a “so-called whistle-blowing”.
Prof. Ambali pointed out that the two lecturers were also accused of circulating inciting leaflets with the intention to disrupt normal academic activities on the University campus.
The Vice-Chancellor also refuted the allegation of nepotism in the promotion of his wife, saying that the promotion was in line with laid-down procedures.
Stressing that the promotion of any academic staff in the University is the sole responsibility of the Appointment and Promotion Committee (AP&C), Prof. Ambali said, “My wife commenced her career at the University of Maiduguri as a Lecturer II officer in 2006 and was promoted to Lecturer I in 2009. She later transferred her service to the University of llorin and was recently promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer by the AP&C”.
“This act was sequel to the approval of both the Department and Faculty management teams”, the Vice-Chancellor stressed further.
Prof. Ambali also cleared the air on why the University withdrew the provisional admissions it earlier offered some candidates in the 2016/2017 admission exercise.
The Vice-Chancellor explained that the University management found out after a screening conducted for the candidates that some of them had uploaded wrong grades of their O’ level results.
Professor Ambali said: “The issue of people trying to say we collected their money and refused to offer them admission is uncalled for. They wasted our time. In any civilized society, those people should be prosecuted. That is examinations malpractice. If those people are using fraudulent means to come in, you can imagine what they will do when they become our students fully. But we thought they were young people, we say they should learn by losing the opportunity. They can reapply. We thought they had to be taught a lesson and that was why we kept quiet”.
